The UK-based pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline on Tuesday said it has ordered the removal of Viagra Connect and Levitra, the two erectile dysfunction drugs that were used to treat erectile dysfunction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, having earlier this year approved a licence for the use of Viagra Connect in the UK, is considering the issue.
A Glaxo spokesman said: "The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has taken the necessary legal action to remove the two drugs, which have been for years used by millions of men and women suffering from erectile dysfunction, from its portfolio of medicines."
The regulator, which has been investigating the matter, said Viagra Connect was a "non-addictive and easy-to-use medication" and the two drugs were safe to use.
The product has been available since the patent on the drug expired in July 2019, but is expected to go on sale next year.
Levitra, sold as Cialis, was introduced in 1998 by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, now Mylan. It was launched in June 1999, and was the first oral drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The company has been struggling to find the money to produce the drug, and is hoping to do all this for the better.
In a statement, the company said: "Levitra is currently being marketed to patients at low cost through a service that provides a prescription-only service to doctors and pharmacists in the UK.

A spokeswoman for Pfizer, which makes Levitra, said: "The Pfizer patent on Cialis expired in March 2018 and the Pfizer brand name drug Levitra has not yet been approved for sale in the UK.
